One of the few posts I am going to salvage from the old board.
The first time I rode with the group somebody went over some of the guidelines. He wasn't preaching or enforcing his will, he was just trying to make sure everybody rode safely and had fun. Since there are a lot of new people, I thought I'd do the same. These are general guidelines we tend to ride under. Nobody is telling you what to do or how you should ride, but if you stick to these guidelines then you and your fellow riders will be safer.
First off, go your own speed. Just because the guy in front of you is going into a corner fast, doesn't mean you have to. Most of our accidents have been because of people trying to keep up with somebody and riding beyond their skill. This isn't a race.
Change positions as you need to. If the guy in front of you is going slower than you want to, pass him up. Just do it safely. Wait till he waves you past or until a straightaway. If you are in front and somebody is riding your ass, let them pass. Wave them on. Please don't pass other riders in corners. If you need to lean into a corner or change your line, you don't expect another rider to be there passing you.
Most of us will pass on double yellows and speed. Don't feel pressured to do anything you don't want to. The more skilled riders generally go through twisties fast, then slow down on straights to let other catch up. We will designate areas ahead of time for stopping and resting.
Lane splitting has never come up, because we never have four lane highways where we ride.
Use hand signals when appropriate. If you pass a car, you can see further than the guy behind you still stuck behind him. Give him a thumbs up if it is clear for him to pass. Wave him off if you see oncoming traffic. Pass the signals back. This helps all riders pass safely.
Point out roadway obstructions to the riders behind you. Most people kick in the direction of it.
Please make sure nobody will be freaked out if you stunt. Give the other rider a little room.
And one that we have not yet been faced with, but if we get pulled over, I am stopping.
That is what comes to mind. Remember, nobody is telling you how to ride. We are just asking that you be courteous to your fellow rider and are suggesing some guidelines so that we are all a little safer. Please add on if I missed anything.
edit: After some thought I think this'll be a thread in which off-topic posts will be deleted. New people shouldn't have to sift through pages of unrelated stuff just to catch the few useful on-topic things said. _________________ Dave, who has an amazon wish list

Thanks for posting this Dave.
We all have fun kidding around on these boards, but we need to take this thread seriously.
Nobody wants to ride with, or get crashed out by some squid who thinks it would be cool to ride so irresponsibly that he would do jail time.
If you log on to BARF, SBR, NBR, or Kneeriders they have the same rules and a copy of THE PACE posted as a sticky in their group ride section. I would recommend reading it. |

A good set of rules to ride by, and a good idea to put 'em up here for everyone to (hopefully) notice. I'll also add that if I'm the one who's put the ride together, I like to take a couple minutes to go over hand signals, how we're going to handle getting separated, and the route, in case we do get separated. _________________ Law of Selective Gravity:
